Although everyone is complaining that the media is obsessed with Obama–which is true–no one is mentioning the fact that because of this fascination the media is giving Sen. McCain a free pass and are not scrutinizing him–except for Keith Olbermann–as they should.

People say that Affirmative Action is not needed but I say that it is. To be honest AA has benefited white women more than it has benefited anyone else. Yes white women still only makes $0.76 to every white man’s dollar, black men makes $0.72 to every white man’s dollar and black women makes $0.67 to every white man’s dollar. How about this, 5 years ago I was paid $2 less than a blonde haired, blue eyed Mexican girl–I had to give you her physical characteristics because they thought she was white– who had 3 years less experience than I did in the same job. I had more world experience because I was just recently discharged from the military 3 years before. I say, even though Affirmative Action is flawed and need to be redone–i.e. removing quotas, I feel it is still necessary, so let’s make a case for it or introduce a better policy.

Now, let’s look at why Affirmative Action is needed based on a national event. Running for the highest office of the land is a Black American man who graduated the top of his law class, was the first black American president of the Harvard law review, serve 8 years in his state senate and currently 3 years in the U.S. Senate. Was a community organizer for 4 years, ran his own Civil Rights Law Firm and has sponsored or co-sponsored over 1085 bills since he has been in the U.S. Senate. Has lived in a foreign country and has traveled all over the world. He supports women’s rights, veterans and anti-discrimination laws and restrictive power of law enforcement and also support green efforts.

On the other hand we have the other guy who is a white male, graduated five from the bottom of his Naval School class, served in the Navy because his father was a high ranking Admiral, was a POW, serves a 17 year senate run in his home state, voted against all women rights policies, equal pay policies, extension of the veteran’s G.I. Bill, the Martin Luther King Holiday; voted for the end of Affirmative Action in his state. He has only sponsored or co-sponsored 18 bills since he has been in the Senate. He does not know geography –thought Iraq borders Pakistan– and does not know the difference between Sunni and Shia.

Now here is the question, under normal circumstances, which candidate would you pick to be in your company? I would choose number 1 because he is well rounded and has a diverse resume but in this country candidate number one is dubbed inexperienced and candidate number two is supposedly the candidate of experience. Experience in what, I ask because honestly, there is not experience difference in the two.

So here’s what Team Obama University of Houston, I have recently found out that Obama is only behind 5% in Texas which means that it is possible to turn this state Blue. So, I ask, what will you do to make it happen?

A little ranting will do

I have to admit that I am like most Americans, I rarely get riled up or offended, and if I am by chance offended, I normally let it slide until comments go overboard.

I ignored the comments that Fox News made about Michelle Obama recently. Calling her “Obama’s Baby’s Mama,” “Mrs. Grievance,” and “A terrorist.” I sat by and watched while they took her “for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country,” statement out of context, just like they did with Rev. Wright. I even sat idly by and ignored when one of the anchors on Fox News called for the assassination of Barack Obama after he won the primary.

But enough is enough, I have decided to give my two cents about a few things pertaining to politics and religion after reading this article on the Huffington Post. The article talks about how the Christian Defense Coalition compared supporting slavery to supporting abortion rights. Even including a depiction of an old slavery cartoon to make their point, that’s when I said I have had enough.

As a champion of history and theology, I have decided to debunk a few statements that the Republican party makes to get Christians to vote for them. Its quite distressing how these tactics work but I insist on clarifying some things. As one philosopher said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” Knowledge is definitely power and most Americans lack the proper knowledge needed to make just, inform decisions.

Falsehood #1 This country was founded on Christianity

Truth: Truth be told the founding fathers were trying to avoid a country ran by religious zealots. The original Puritans left Europe because they were tired of a continent run by “religious” authority to come to the new found land to practice their brand of religion. As a matter of fact one of the key constitutional statements is for our government to abide in a place “that is free of religion.” That there would not be a dominant religious power..period. Even Jesus believed in a separation of church and state, “give unto Caesar that which is Caesar and unto G-d that which is G-d.”

If you want to go a step farther, a nation founded on Christian principles would not have enslaved a people based on their skin color, oppressed women and it definitely would not have killed off 98% of its indigenous population. No indeed, this country was not founded on any religious belief, at all.

Interjecting religion in politics lead to fanaticism. Take for instance, the Crusades, which was supposedly a holy war. Since when did killing people in the name of God, satisfied God? The Jews were commanded to cry over the lives lost in Egypt when they left seeking the promise land. Life is important to G-d. How about fanatic Islamists? Islam a religion of peace that teaches that one must respect all, has succumb to this very idea of using religion for political gain. It is shameless and godless.

Falsehood#2: If you are a Christian, you should support Republicans because they are opposed to abortion and gay rights.

Truth: Wow, really? When did Jesus ever mention these two things in any of his sermons? Ever? The basic tenants of Christianity–most religions in fact– are feed and clothe the poor, heal the sick, and comfort those who mourn. And above all things, love thy neighbor as you love yourself. And love God. In saying this, the Republican party is juxtapose to these ideas. You can call a Democrat a Socialist, but the very person you worship was the first ever socialist. He believed in helping his fellow man when he fell down, go rescue him from the ditch, don’t just past by and then pretend you are so righteous. Republicans want to cut welfare programs (feed/clothe the poor), republicans cut the amount of bereavement time to 3 days (comfort those who mourn), republicans want to nuke and control the world and push their brand of democracy down everyone’s throat(love thy neighbor). To me, it seems the Christians are in the wrong party.

But homosexuality is an abomination, well so is gossip, fornication, ejaculating outside a woman’s womb (many men should be dropping dead, condoms are an abomination), talking back to your parents, and the list goes on and on. Interestingly enough, we like to only use what is convenient, so before you start pointing fingers, look within.

But, we do not want our country destroyed by G-d because we condone homosexuality like in Sodom and Gomorrah. Hmm, now that you bring this up, let’s recall the story. The funny thing that people forget about this story is that it wasn’t the act of homosexuality that caused G-d to rain fire and brimstone on the population of Gomorrah, but the raping of children. But even after that, he told Abraham, if you find me ONE righteous person, I will spare the whole city. So what you are saying to me is that none of you are righteous enough to save this country?

Take it from the Jew, your rationale is flawed. It is bigotry against someone that you do not understand and against a lifestyle for which you are afraid of, therefore you hand-pluck scripture to justify your hatred.

We call Obama unpatriotic because he does not wear a lapel pin and because his wife stated she is proud for the first time in her adult life of her country and not because her husband is doing well but because hope is making a comeback. True patriotism, according to our founding fathers, is the ability to recognize when your government is taking a destructive path and to, if necessary, overthrow it when it is not functioning correctly for the people. Our government was created for the PEOPLE not the other way around. Our government has not catered to us in a very long time. Don’t you think it is time that it does?

I leave you with the words penned by one Thomas Jefferson from the Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”





A new musician on the rise

Hey friends. It has been a while but you know me, I am so good about informing everyone about new things that come out like really good music.

Over my birthday weekend–yes another, I discovered a new artist who is amazingly talented singer and songwriter. He is coming to Austin and San Antonio this week at a Borders near you.

He hails from Oxford, England and like all the great rock musicians from England before he carries a talented mantle.

If you like 80s rock like Depeche Mode, U2, Duran Duran, A-ha, Pet Shop Boys, R.E.M. and Keane–not been 80s but in that genre, then you will like this guy.

Get out there and support him for me. I promise you, you won’t regret it. His shows are free and his double disc album is $10. His album has a thought provoking political message mixed in with love ballads and life stories.

What most people don’t know about me is that besides being a political junkie, I am a rabid music junkie. I am always looking for new independent artists. It has been a while since I found a good one. The last one I discovered was Adele and she is becoming mainstream now thanks to I-Tunes. Damn I-Tunes.

Last Sunday my friend and I Esme were lamenting that there weren’t anymore political rock bands like the Beatles after watching “Across the Universe.” Low and behold 2 days later I was contacted by an artist named Fox-Elipsus on Facebook. He was planning a tour of Borders in the Houston area and saw that I love U2 and Duran Duran and claimed that his music was similar.

Boy was he right. The young man not only gets music, he gets life. His music is very political like the Beatles and sounds a lot like Duran Duran and U2. He is originally from Oxford, England and now resides in upstate New York. I decided for my 32nd anniversary–code for birthday– that all my friends and I are going to go to his free concert at Borders-Galleria on Sunday and then go to my home for a party to commensurate the day I was born 32 years ago.

I will definitely take lots of pictures but I admonish my readers to heck this young man out. He is amazing and definitely go to one of his concerts if he comes to your town.

The Truth about Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright

So they have diminished the Rev. to a sound bite and made him look like a Nazi, but how many of you have actually seen the ten minute sermon? I bet not many. I am Jewish and I just sat and watched and what a mess the media has made. This man has lost his integrity and his reputation because Fox does not want a Dem in office and because CNN is too lazy to research the facts before posting information–wait I am sorry CNN is more concerned with ratings then the truth and that to me makes me ill. The media is despicable, deplorable, and downright dirty.

I have attached the true sermon–by which the Rev. Wright was quoting a “white ambassador named George Peck” who was interviewed on Fox after 9/11. Rev. Wright went on to denounce violence, terrorism and told his congregation that they need to reflect on what they have done to cause harm to this nation and to their relationship with G-d.

After this debacle I will never again watch the News. I am sick to my stomach because of the lack of journalistic integrity that journalists portray. Please watch and learn.

I have also included a white pastor who knows Rev. Wright. Listen to what he has to say about what the news media is doing to this man’s reputation.

McCain and Huckabee are defending Obama. How many news outlets are talking about this? Don’t you think it is amazing the way people defend him? It says a lot about Obama’s character, when the Republicans are defending a Democrat against a Republican, rightest news media. Amazing. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it, Fox news.





Obama’s Race Speech: A Response from a Rwandan

There are things that move me and then there are things that move me to action. This YouTube clip of this young man who grew up n Rwanda and left when he was a young boy because of the genocide and his experience in America with racism will make you want to move, move to change this nation. Move to change those around you. Move to make this world a better place. Move to heal the chasm that swallows us up when we try to join hands to narrow it and move to unite this nation.

Is it possible? Can America with its dirty seedy past be healed? Can America, a country that started by eradicating a nation of people who were friendly and on the backs of a people stolen from their homeland and brought to another in chains, be healed?

I am not an idealist, I have never been, I have seen hate in the eyes of black, brown, yellow and white but I have also seen hope and understanding in those same eyes. Despite my cynical heart, somehow I believe it is possible for us to be just America without all the hyphens. I believe the hyphens divide us, I believe those hyphens are strategically placed to make us feel as if we will never truly be an American. It is those hyphens that divide us not our race, our skin or our cultures.

When I lived in Europe, no one had hyphens in their ethnic title. They weren’t Afro-Italian or German-Italian. They were Italian. Although subcultures existed people were proud to be apart of the larger culture without giving up or not celebrating their own.

I have been saying this for years now and watching this video and experiencing this young man’s pain, tears and even joy; there is nothing more in this world that I wish to be right now, except JUST American.
